The all powerful Google

Posted in Tech by Craig at 5:41 pm |

So Google has announced its latest effort in pushing the technology envelope. They are moving into mobile phones. While this isn’t surprising in the least (its been foreshadowed for a while now), it does offer up some possibilities. Google, along with the partners of this venture are making an open source platform for mobile phone. Granted open source isn’t all that its cracked up to be if its only on one system, but this is where Google has succeeded, there are a lot of major partners in this venture Broadcom, eBay, China Mobile, Intel, LG Electronics, NTT DoCoMo, Nvidia, Samsung, Sprint Nextel, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Texas Instruments (PC World Article).

With this many large players will this effort succeed? Think of it this way, developers will now be able to develop applications for multiple phones, multiple carriers without having to change its code to adjust for every single phone out there. Much like when IBM allowed its proprietary PC to be built by other companies in the late 1980s caused a huge number of computers to be built and expanded the use of them beyond the generic word processor and spreadsheet applications, this move may cause a similar explosion in apps and uses for the mobile phone. I feel like this may make internet on mobile phones finally viable. Two questions though, how will this affect the way we digest media and or information, and what benefit is this to Google?
